Plumage DetailsMales have a crimson red crown and crest, extending to the nape. The face is white with a prominent black moustachial stripe. The upperparts are golden-yellow with black scaling or spotting, particularly on the mantle and scapulars, and a bright golden-yellow rump. Underparts are whitish with dark scaling. Females have a black forecrown streaked with white, with the red confined to the rear crown and nape.
Vocalization / CallIts vocalizations include a loud, ringing 'ki-ki-ki-ki' or a series of sharp, high-pitched notes. Like other woodpeckers, it also produces drumming sounds on trees.
