Plumage DetailsAdults in breeding plumage feature a prominent solid black hood, extending down the nape, sharply contrasting with the pure white body. The upperwings are pale grey, and crucially, lack any black on the primary tips, appearing all white from below. The bill is stout and dark red, often with a faint black subterminal band, and the legs are dark red. Non-breeding adults have a white head with a dark smudge behind the eye.
