The crown is black with fine white spots, and males exhibit a distinctive red patch on the forecrown. The face is dark with white spotting, and the short tail is dark with white outer feathers.

Description
The Spotted Piculet is a very small, short-tailed woodpecker endemic to northeastern Brazil. It is characterized by its rufous-brown plumage heavily spotted with white, and an active foraging style on small branches and twigs.
