Description

The Mallard is a medium-sized dabbling duck that is widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere. Males (drakes) are easily recognizable with their iridescent green head, white neck ring, chestnut breast, and grey flanks. Females (hens) are mottled brown with an orange bill and a distinctive blue speculum on their wings. Mallard ducklings, as seen in the image, are typically yellow with brown stripes and are precocial, meaning they are able to leave the nest and feed themselves shortly after hatching.
